Just as you suggested, asking your credit card company to lower your rates really can help. You’ve got to be ready to hear them say “no” and be prepared to be firm about your request. I have also found that I need to have all of my monthly payments setup to automatically draft from my accounts. I don’t have to stress about missing any payments by accident and therefore, don’t have to worry about $30+ late fees.

I’ve heard about freezing your cards! The only problem with this is that if you have problems with overspending, you’ll find a way around this. One mental trick I use is to think about how much I earn an hour and then to think about how many hours I’d have to work to pay for an item. Then if you’re thinking about putting an item on a credit card, factor in the interest.
