Men’s Izod On Sale At Costco. Is a childhood icon good for my budget?

Ever since 3rd grade, I’ve wanted one of those green alligator izod logo shirts. I can remember asking my mom for one when we would go to the mall. The standard answer was, “they are expensive” and “I’m not spending $50 on a shirt.” It seemed like all the kids had one in my class, in reality, 3 probably had them. Instead, my mom would buy some Izod knock-offs from JcPenny or Sears. I recall the Sears logo had a dragon rather than an alligator. Did anyone else have the Sears dragon? I never got teased or ridiculed for the Sears dragon, I guess kids must have been nice to me or didn’t care.

It’s interesting how fashion icons seems to come back for some designers, like Lacoste Izod. I was in Costco today and saw a huge pile of red, pink, blue, and grey Izod shirts. Right next to the Izod shirts were the Kirkland brand Costco polo’s. Interesting how they put the highest price shirt right next to the cheapest shirt in the store. Was this a great chance to finally buy an Izod at wholesale prices? I picked one up and it still looked and felt as good as I remember as a child. But, the Kirkland shirt looked just as good. Also, you have to realize this is the 35 year old and not the 8 year old analyzing the Izod.

The price for the Izod was $49.99, the Kirkland $14.99. Could I justify spending $35 more for the Izod? I guess I could, but should I? My clothing budget is $20 a month, not enough for the Izod. I purchased a navy blue Kirkland Signature Costco shirt and It works for me. I’m happy with my childhood memories for now and don’t think I need to bust the budget on the Izod. I would rather save the money for something more important for my family, like food. Thinking back to my 3rd grade mentality, I probably would have thought food was not as important as an Izod. Would you be tempted if you saw an Izod on sale? What is your fashion weakness?
