Did you know that one family continues to receive royalties for quite possibly the most popular song in the world – the ‘Happy Birthday’ song? Ever wish you wrote an annoyingly overplayed ancient children’s jingle that doesn’t seem to get old? Residual income is ongoing income for the production of an initial work and has many benefits over the linear income (or ongoing payment for ongoing work – the stuff we’re used to).

Did you know that the second richest man in the world owes much of his success to residual income received from the original purchasing of three pinball machines? Warren Buffet set up the machines in various shops and collected a regular monthly income, with little, if any exertion apart from the horrendous task of manually collecting the profits.

Residual income is like an apple tree. You originally sow the seeds and the benefits (or fruits) are perpetual. You don’t have to be overly creative or talented to receive some form of residual income, although it is often associated with actors, composers, writers and royalties. Investment property purchasing is another common way of creating residual income by allowing tenants to contribute rent, paying off the purchased property and eventually providing another stream of income. This kind of income is a wonderful way of making money with little direct involvement after the initial contribution or work is completed.

While residual income is often coined ‘smart’ money – it involves determination and drive and often involves a risk component. It is not always easily achieved. However, the globe is getting increasingly smaller due to technologies such as the Internet and it has been found to be a wonderful place to establish a residual income. An increasingly popular way of attaining a residual income online has emerged recently and it stems from Affiliate marketing. This process essentially involves creating a website pre-selling products on behalf of a manufacturer. While they retain complete control over the products and the sales, the company provides commission incentives to you based on the heavy traffic flows and purchases made via your website. There are many companies that offer ‘pillars of sale’ that track the sale ladders and maximize the profits you are able to receive. Furthermore, referrals and advertising campaigns such as ‘pay per click’ can secure an alternative method of passive income, requiring merely initial effort but continuing to bear rewards.

Maintaining a residual income requires ‘smart’ thinking, which is why it is aptly known as ‘smart’ money. While marketing can sometimes be shrouded in convoluted terms and even understanding Affiliate and Referral programs is enough to make many gasp – persistence and dedication in the initial stages is the only security of discovering and reaping in this kind of enduring income.

Madison @ My Dollar Plan found an interesting way to get Free Money From the US Mint. What’s needed is $250-$2,500 in available funds and a rewards credit card. I would not advise you try this if you carry any balance on your cards, as it defeats the purpose. Start here if you need to get out of credit card debt. In fact, I would urge you not to consider this if you also don’t have an emergency account or short term savings account. This is an investment and will take a couple weeks to receive your coins. You might have the CC bill come due before you receive your coins, so be careful! If you want to read further, here’s an interesting way to earn some fun money.

Visit the U.S. Mint website and review the details.

As of 8/19/08 standard shipping is free.

Coins may be purchased as one box for $250 or two boxes for $500.

One President per household. It appears you can purchase other Presidents. 5 are currently available.

Use a cash back or reward credit card. The U.S. Mint accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express (Amex), and Discover Cards.

Once coins arrive, you can use them anywhere you shop. This is U.S. currency and is accepted everywhere. They would make a great gift from the tooth fairy too!

If you don’t plan on spending $250 or $2,500 in cash soon, visit your local bank branch and make a deposit. If they give you a hard time, just make several $50 deposits.

What kind of passive income or alternative income will I expect from this transaction? I’m going to use my Blue Cash Rewards from American Express as an example. I have two reward tiers with this Amex card. I earn .05% on purchases up to $6,500 and then 1.5% on everything over that. Two examples show earning potential at .05% and 1.5% below. Be sure to read your credit card reward information carefully and call your company if you have any questions.

Purchase $250 in coins @ .05% earns $1.25

Purchase $250 in coins @ 1.5% earns $3.75

Purchase $500 in coins @ .05% earns $2.50

Purchase $500 in coins @ 1.5% earns $3.75

Purchase the max $2,500 in coins @ .05% earns $12.50

Purchase the max $2,500 in coins @ 1.5% earns $37.50

My conclusion: It may not be worth your time or effort if you are only going to purchase $250 in coins with a 1% reward card. You’ll only be earning $2.50 and may not be worth your time and cover your gas expense to your local bank. It could still be fun and if you were looking to purchase $1 Presidential coins anyway, you still might want to consider it. I do think it would be worth your time and money if you have a higher reward credit card and you can invest $500 or more. It takes just a few minutes to purchase the coins and as long as your bank will take your deposit, you’ll be making $1.25-$37.50 for your efforts. Your credit card reward program may earn you more! Just to be sure you should probably ask your bank manager if you could deposit these coins. I don’t see it being an issue, but they might have a limit to how many $1 coins they like to have on hand. You could probably get around this by making several $50 deposits.

Is Yuwie the perfect source of passive income? It’s been several months since I’ve written about Yuwie or provided an update on my earnings. For those that have never heard of Yuwie, it’s a social network that shares a portion of ad revenue with users. Sort of like a Facebook or Mypace, but much smaller. I really enjoyed using Yuwie for about 3 months, and still login once a week to check mail and check on a couple of friends that I met online. I think the potential exists for Yuwie to become a great social network, but the new applications like music and open social just don’t exists. They could in the future, and that would be wonderful for Yuwie.

Today I checked my Yuwie account, and I have 1,176 referrals through 10 levels.

Seems impressive, but the earnings have dropped in half over the last three months. My best month March, I made $10.84. Now I’m making about $5.00 a month.

Also, new members have decreased by half as well. I remember when I first joined I would see 2-3,000 new members a day, now it’s more like 1,000-1,500. Could it be due to a saturated social network market? Yuwie is one of the only, or only, social networks that shares revenue with users. Myspace and Facebook, with the millions of users, don’t share a penny. Interesting how it has been difficult to invite a friend to Yuwie from the Facebook platform. The other aspect going against Yuwie, why would you leave Facebook when all your friends are on it? If you’re looking for easy daily cash, Yuwie is probably not the answer. Many enhancements and upgrades will be needed before the masses leave Facebook and Myspace for Yuwie. If you use a social network, does it bother you that you’re not sharing the revenue?

Finding Passive Income or alternative income sources has been one of my passions for many years. I enjoy reviewing companies, investments, and opportunities that offer passive income streams. One of the companies that have been consistent and offer online passive income is Big Crumbs. June has been my best month ever with them, earning $61.79. The best part, I have received 7 payments on the 15th of each month directly to my paypal account.

Big Crumbs shares the affiliate commission with it’s users, up to 5 generations. More can be found by taking a tour of the site and visiting the “How it works” section. It’s free to join, and I think it can be a great opportunity to start an easy and established affiliate program. One aspect of affiliate programs through Amazon, or ebay, is the inability to earn income on friends referrals. Some affiliate programs offer $5 or $10 sign-up bonuses, Big Crumbs doesn’t need to offer bonus incentives, you just get paid for all purchases made by your referrals. When a referral shops at ebay, buy.com, overstock.com, dell.com, Target.com, and over 200 other stores, you get paid a percentage of each sale. Up to 5 levels! To find out more about Big Crumbs, and the opportunity to add a great affiliate program to your blog or website, click here

How many people are looking for ebay coupons, paypal coupons, and paypal codes? I looked, and a google search for June showed over 65,000 searches. This is only U.S. traffic. The potential is much greater, as Big Crumbs can be used in Australia, England, Ireland, and Canada.

What if you don’t have a website or blog to market Big Crumbs? No worry, you can always sign-up and mention the opportunity to family, friends and co-workers. The easiest part, you have nothing to sell. They share the affiliate income with you, you don’t have to sell a product or service. You can also use them to save money while shopping and use the site to ship as you would normally. Just be sure to make your purchases through Big Crumbs and you will be credited. Maybe you are just looking for deals for shopping, you may enjoy checking out Big Crumbs.

As part of your research of any company, you should research the BBB or contact the company directly if you have any questions. I always enjoy doing a google search for scams as well, try a google search of Bigcrumbs scam or Big Crumbs scam and read some testimonials. The only ones I found were from individuals that had never tried it.

If you already use Big Crumbs, let me know how you like it. Are you finding new items to purchase for your home, school, or online business? Some items I’ve purchased through them on ebay are: water filters, toys, car parts, cd’s, and dvd;s. Pennies and nickels can turn into dollars and offer a wonderful passive income stream.

I will be the first to admit that I don’t have any artistic capabilities. In fact, my 4 year old and I can draw the same stick figures. It’s funny and frightening, at the same time. I was researching some recent changes to the ebay feedback policy and stumbled across a great website called Etsy. I’m probably the last one to know about this wonderful website for artists and designers that enable them to sell items worldwide. I’m amazed at the quality and detail that many of these handmade items have. Here are a few examples that I found:

I was looking for a new dog bed and came across this item called Puppy Lovey. If you have the ability to sew and some old fabric around the house, this could be a great little money maker. Give your kids something to do on those boring summer days and make some money too.

Look at what Mittenmaker has done with an old tennis racket cover. You could make several of these from a tennis racket cover. And, who ever uses a tennis racket cover? Nobody! I use a tennis bag and usually throw away the racket cover.

Baby Bug Shoe Designs made some little baby golf shoes. I could see grandparents buying these by the truckload for the grandkids.

What a wonderful online job for your kids this summer. Tell them to fire up the sewing machine and make some money with Etsy. As a teenager, I might have been tempted to do it myself. Your kids could easily make spending money for the summer, or clothes money for the next school year. Parents, what a fun way to teach your kids to be creative and make some spending money. And don’t forget about you parents, I know you are more creative than I am. I would be interested if you sell on etsy, and if Etsy has become an alternative income source for you. I also have a list of passive income ideas you can review here.

Prosper With Me is a blog where I like to share wealth building strategies as well as get feedback on wealth building ideas. I was contacted by a friend who introduced a program called Passport to Wealth. I want to be clear and state that I am not a member of Passport to Wealth and do not have a hidden agenda to signup everyone who is reading this post. I actually would like to hear your praise or criticism of this company. I think it’s important to look at this from an investment perspective and see if the company is sound and legit. I am also going to see if the Better Business Bureau has any info on Passport to Wealth. My friend has sent me an email almost everyday with impressive statistics regarding income and number of closed sales. Some of the emails claim $40,000 in just 4 months. Seems to good to be true? What are your thoughts on Passport to Wealth? Does this company have a solid business plan and great products. In looking at the companies website, I noticed several books that you receive when you buy-in. Are these actually legitimate ebooks that have great content?

In order to become a director or Passport to Wealth rep, you need to spend $997. This allows you access to resell the ebooks and signup other reps. One of the first questions I noticed was that you defer your first two $997 sign-ups. Your first two sales go to your direct upline and you must wait for your third sale to make $997. Based on the emails I have received from my friend, it appears that they are very eager to train and do some hand holding for newbies. But what happens after I make my first two sales? Why would I still receive training from a support group? How does my Passport to Wealth upline continue to make money? The website does not answer any of these questions. My friend’s upline does hold three conference calls a week and I am planning to attend with my questions. I do hope the calls are open for discussion about Passport to Wealth and not a scripted phone message.

Again, this blog is a way to share ideas about building wealth and I would enjoy your thoughts on Passport to Wealth as a business opportunity.

I’m adding about 200+ referrals a month to my total tree. In case you are not familiar with Yuwie, it’s a free social network similar to Myspace or Facebook and does not charge a membership fee. I have enjoyed meeting new friends from around the world and sharing stories about work, family, school, ebay, investments, and hobbies. My referral tree grew to the final 10th level and I have one person on level 10. To find out more, you can view some great video clips here at Yuwie. Yuwie shares a portion of the revenue from advertisers up to 10 levels. The RSR, or Revenue Sharing Rate for March was 40 cents. The RSR will increase as the number of Yuwie members increases. As more join, the advertisers will want to bid higher for ad placement on Yuwie. Currently, Myspace and Facebook does not share this revenue with it’s members….but Yuwie does. I don’t expect 90% returns every month, but do expect the number of referrals to grow. Yuwie is a great example of passive income. I earn income 24/7 and don’t have to be logged on to make money. The RSR can fluctuate and the earning potential can always decrease, but for now the earnings appear to be gaining momentum.

An interesting article from The Guardian interviews the founder of Yuwie, Korry Rogers, and several Yuwie users. According to Rogers, Yuwie is not burning through cash the way others have. What are your thoughts on Yuwie’s growth and future success? Will Yuwie just become a haven for spammers or an honest business built with members interested in social networking and making real friends?

Making social networking pay – for users
Can websites that promise to pay visitors for visiting really work? Or does history show that they are doomed to fail?
Bertan Budak
The Guardian,
Thursday January 31 2008

A Facebook user’s profile

Being paid to spend time on social networks sounds tempting, especially to those who spend hours surfing sites such as Facebook and MySpace. But can websites that promise to pay you for your time really deliver?

Debra Hunting is a user of the social networking website Yuwie.com. Like 400,000 other users, she is paid to read adverts, insert blog entries, upload photos and to mingle with friends and family online.

Hunting has just received her second cheque of $71 (£36) for her “December 2008 Xmas” kitty and is about to email her work colleagues inviting them to set up profiles. Her aim this month is to persuade a further 20 people to join so she can add another “nice amount” to her Christmas fund.

“My friend Jo referred me five months ago,” she explains. “I was using Facebook at the time and after watching the set of Yuwie videos (tinyurl.com/2zuk4p) which explained how I’d get paid and what I needed to do, I immediately signed up. I’ve been hooked ever since.”

Pay per view

Yuwie launched last July. It pays social networkers by sharing a percentage of its ad revenue with users. It’s ranked among the top 2,500 websites in the world, according to Alexa.com, which ranks sites according to their traffic history.

As well as paying members to generate page impressions, Yuwie’s structure means the amount of money you earn also depends on the number of potential users you refer. That structure is like a pyramid of 10 levels, with level one at the bottom. Level 10 users could in theory earn more than $10,000 a month. The catch: you have to refer 59,049 friends who then have to generate 59,049,000 page views. In practice, no user has got anywhere near this: the most anyone has earned in a month is $850, while the average user is said to pocket around $100.

But Korry Rogers, its chief executive, believes that Yuwie has paved the way for a new breed of social networking. “There are hundreds of millions of dollars spent each month in advertising on social networking sites,” he says. “Why should the company keep all the money? The users are the ones inviting their friends, the users provide the content and do all the work. Without the users, there would be no site, so we decided it was time that they got a share of the profit.”

However, others are not so sure. Similar websites that promised to share revenues with users, such as Edgeio.com (tinyurl.com/zgt2v) and Agloco.com were unable to cover their operating costs and collapsed.

“Let’s hope they can afford to pay their service provider for their bandwidth,” is one comment on a blog discussing Yuwie (tinyurl.com/3bregs). Another commenter adds: “Looks like another pyramid scheme. 20,000 referrals and 20m impressions for a measly $1,000? Why don’t I put that effort into generating those users/impressions on my own site and make $40,000+?”. Another was more succinct:”Nope, it doesn’t look enticing.”

Yuwie is the latest in a series of similar ventures, not all of which have been a success. Edgeio.com – the site is now up for auction – was a tool for bloggers and buyers. It used content from RSS-enabled sources and categorised millions of listings in a central location and paid its users to use this service. However, it closed at the beginning of December, despite the $1.5m it had received in angel funds from the likes of Louis Monier, founder of internet search engine AltaVista, and the RSS Investors Funds; and a further $5m of funding it received in October 2006 from Intel Capital, the investment arm of the giant chipmaker, and Transcosmos, the strategic investor.

“The company burned through that money according to plan, meaning they ran out this month [December],” says Michael Arrington, co-founder of Edgeio and the maintainer of Techcrunch.com, the influential blog. “The product roadmap was fulfilled, meaning development lags didn’t hurt the company. But the revenues didn’t come in and user/partner milestones weren’t met. And that meant no one else was going to put more money into the company.”

Edgeio is not the only pay-to-surf website that has run into trouble. Agloco.com announced its end just days after the demise of Edgeio, saying: “We continue to believe in the Agloco concept, but our revenue is currently not sufficient to give members a meaningful distribution. And though there are increases in membership, the resulting revenue is not enough to support operating costs. As a development team we are unable to continue to use our savings to fund the operations (tinyurl.com/34dkw5).” Agloco was in fact a reincarnation of Alladvantage.com, a site that paid its users to surf by showing them advertisements related to what they were viewing online, via a toolbar.

When Agloco.com’s downfall was announced, bloggers were quick to cry “we told you so”. Said one: “You’ll see another similar company pop up soon and you’ll see people taking part again and the cycle’s going to repeat itself – I’m willing to bet my money on it,” wrote one (tinyurl.com/34dkw5). Another remarked: “It’s a bother to get paid to browse and get all this advertising. It’s simply a no-no.”

At Yuwie, Rogers is upbeat about his company. He says: “We haven’t noticed any financial downfall. We’re growing each month. Right now we’re generating between $30,000 and $40,000 per month in total revenue.”

Yuwie pays “between 50% and 60% of our revenue to users each month,” says Rogers. Backed by a small team of one database administrator and two helpdesk and content managers, Yuwie eats $6,000 a month in operating costs.

“The way Yuwie is structured, it’s impossible for us to go bust,” says Rogers. “We don’t promise our users any specific rate for page views. The rates we pay our users fluctuate each month based on the amount of revenue the site generates. Since we are paying our users a percentage of our actual revenue, there is no way we can ever owe our users more than what we make.”

Bored with the board

But Daniel Waterhouse, an internet sector partner at private equity house 3i, believes that sites like Yuwie will put off potential advertisers. “People aren’t going to be interested in reading the adverts, only to make as much money as they can by clicking on loads of banners,” says Waterhouse. “The only thing I’d expect to come out of a site like this is spam, and lots of it.” He also points out that money earned in this way will be liable to tax.

How long will Yuwie’s users remain in love with it? Sophia Bhat, a former user of Yuwie, says: “I stopped surfing and deleted my profile because I was sick to death of the amount of ad space Yuwie allocates to advertisers. It looks like one huge advertisement board rather than a place to social network. Once users realise how much effort it takes to earn even money on Yuwie, they’ll pack up and leave just like I did.”

Hunting disagrees. “I have nothing but total confidence that Yuwie will prosper. It offers the same applications as both MySpace and Facebook, so users of the site will not get bored and leave. I used to use my Facebook account regularly but deleted it to join Yuwie. I do not regret this decisio
n.”

Another user, Sumaer Amar, is less sure. “I didn’t like the layout of the site, but all they need to do is make it more interesting – by adding more applications, by using a cleaner format and arranging everything so that it doesn’t look so cluttered.”

Amar picks up on an important issue for any website user: “I don’t like how the red hits your eye – it looks too cartoony.

“Once they offer a good social networking experience, then people will want to keep surfing. They shouldn’t rely on the fact that people just want to earn money out of it.”
